American startup Otto Aviation is building a hydrogen-powered version of its private jet, which is said to be the world's most fuel-efficient. The ambition is to produce an emission-free aircraft by 2027.
Private jet manufacturer Otto Aviation will work with hydrogen and electric-focused aircraft developer Zeroavia to develop a new version of the Celera 500L jet. It is a plane that the manufacturer is already marketing as the world's most fuel-efficient. The plane's design enables it to fly on between 9.4 and 13 liters of aviation fuel per 100 kilometers. This means up to 80 percent less fuel consumption compared to other private jets in the same size class, reports New Technology.
But the goal is to take emissions all the way down to zero with a hydrogen engine from Zeroavia.
”"Zeroavia's hydrogen-powered electric powertrain helps us realize Otto's commitment to lowering operating costs and climate impact for operators. Otto strives to provide the most efficient aircraft in every sense of the word: minimizing maintenance and operating costs and reducing emissions," says Otto Aviation CEO William Otto Jr. in a press release.
The Celera 500L is not yet in production. The jet fuel-powered variant is expected to be ready for series production in 2025 and will be able to carry up to 19 passengers. The hydrogen-powered variant is planned to be available in 2027.
A disadvantage of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles is that the range is 1,850 kilometers compared to the fossil fuel-powered vehicle, which is 8,300 kilometers.
