How the travel guarantee works when the airline goes bankrupt

You should stay updated on Ving's website. You have to wait and see which company they try to rebook you to or if it is the case that you have to stay another day to wait for rebooking or you get money back to arrange your own flight home, says Maria Wiezell, Consumer Advisor at Swedish Consumers.

There are a number of rules that are intended to protect consumers in the event of a canceled trip or delayed flight.

The Package Travel Act applies if you have booked a trip that consists of at least two different types of travel services, such as flights and hotels.

There are also EU regulations that apply if you experience a delayed or cancelled flight when flying from an EU country or with an EU airline. And then there is a travel guarantee.

– The travel guarantee applies when a package travel company has gone bankrupt. Svenska Ving has not gone bankrupt, it is the parent company that has gone bankrupt, says Maria Wiezell.

So when it comes to travel further ahead, there are still several things that need to be clarified before it can be said what applies to consumers.

– Just because it's turbulent today doesn't mean you have the right to cancel your Christmas trips without charge, if it's the case that Svenska Ving will survive, says Maria Wiezell.
