The European Commission has developed a proposal for a standard format for a vaccination certificate to make it easier for EU citizens to travel within the Union's borders this summer. This is what we know about the so-called "green certificate".

• The certificate is proposed to contain important information such as name, date of birth, nationality and the date it was issued. In addition to personal data, the green passport is a document that contains information about any vaccinations, recent tests and medical history. It will also state which vaccine you have received.
• The purpose of the certificate is to facilitate free movement within the EU during the pandemic. The idea is that a person travelling to another EU country should have the same freedom of movement as its citizens. Countries that continue to require new tests or quarantine of people with valid certificates will have to notify the European Commission and ”justify their decision”.
• It is not only digital, but also comes in paper format. The proposal is that the certificate should contain a QR code that collects all the necessary information and that can be scanned at airports, for example. The certificate should be completely free, work in all EU countries and be available in several languages.
• The vaccination certificate will, for the time being, cover the preparations approved by the EMA: Pfizer/Biontech, Astra Zeneca, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson. However, individual member states will have the right to include other vaccines, for example Hungary, which has also approved the Chinese Sinovac and the Russian Sputnik.
• The European Commission has submitted a binding legislative proposal, which means that the processing of the proposal may take a long time. Before the law on a green certificate is ready to be hammered out, the member states, among others, will have to deal with the issue. The proposal will also have to be negotiated and decided on in several EU bodies before the EU-wide vaccine certificate can become a reality.
• However, the Commission expects that the certificate can be used as early as this summer.
