Air Canada will lay off at least half of its staff due to the large losses incurred due to the corona crisis. The decision affects up to 20,000 people.
The airline has made the decision after being forced to reduce the number of flight departures by 95 percent due to border closures and other restrictions, the company wrote in an email to employees seen by the AFP news agency.
”"Today we made the very painful decision to reduce our operations as planned, which unfortunately means a reduction in our workforce of between 50 and 60 percent," the company, which has around 38,000 employees, wrote.
Latin American airline giant Latam is also forced to lay off a large number of employees. The company announced that 1,400 employees will be laid off in Chile, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru.
The international industry organization IATA predicts losses totaling $15 billion for airlines in Latin America this year. Last weekend, Colombian Avianca filed for restructuring in the United States, citing the effects of the corona crisis.
