The taxi company Uber is cutting another 3,000 jobs and closing 45 offices, reports the Wall Street Journal, citing sources.

American Uber is going through its own coronavirus crisis and, in addition to cutbacks, is considering divesting business units that are not considered core to its operations, according to the WSJ.

The message was sent to Uber employees in an email on Monday, less than two weeks after the company announced that 3,700 jobs would be made redundant and that a cost-saving programme had been formed to reduce costs by $1 billion since the pandemic decreased sales.

The additional 3,000 employees, a group which does not include those who drive for Uber under so-called gig contracts, means that a quarter of the workforce will disappear from the company.

Uber's taxi revenue decreased by as much as 80 percent at the worst of the pandemic, with a loss of $2.9 billion accumulated in the first quarter, according to statements made by CEO Dana Khosrowshahi at the latest interim financial report.
