In recent months, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (UD) has helped around 8,000 Swedes return home to Sweden during the coronavirus pandemic. However, it is estimated that there are still at least a thousand Swedes who want to, but cannot, return home, writes Dagens Nyheter.

With the help of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, many Swedes have been flown to commercial flights. Others have been placed on one of the 20 so-called assisted departures – flights that are specially equipped to fly citizens home. In this way, Swedes have been able to get home from countries such as Peru, Gambia, Morocco and Indonesia.

No more assisted trips are planned at the moment. Instead, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is trying to help Swedes find regular flights.
