Paris is suing Airbnb, accusing the accommodation service of publishing 1,000 illegal ads.

The lawsuit is worth the equivalent of around 130 million kronor, according to the city's mayor, Anne Hidalgo.

Under French law, people in Paris are allowed to rent out their apartments for up to 120 days a year. Ads must include a registration number to ensure that the rental period does not exceed that.

Last year, a law was passed that allows companies like Airbnb to be fined the equivalent of around 130,000 kronor for each incorrectly designed advertisement. The capital is now using that law to take Airbnb to court.

“The goal is to send out a warning to get rid of the unauthorized rentals that are destroying certain areas of Paris,” Hidalgo told the Journal du Dimanche newspaper.
