The number of guest nights at commercial accommodation facilities in Sweden increased by 3.4% or one million guest nights during June, July and August, compared to the previous summer. The total number of guest nights for the summer months amounted to 30.8 million, which is a record for accommodation statistics. This is shown by new statistics from the Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth.
Guest nights at hotels increased the most
Guest nights increased relatively the most at hotels, with an increase of 4.5% compared to the previous summer. Guest nights also increased at camping sites by 3.9%. For hostels, holiday villages and commercial brokerage of private apartments and cottages, the number of guest nights decreased from the previous summer.
– Despite the recession in Sweden, we see that the number of guest nights at commercial accommodation facilities is generally increasing throughout the country. It is primarily the hotels and foreign visits that are the driving force behind the development, but campsites have also had a good summer, says Patrik Svensson, statistician at the Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth.
Largest increase in foreign guest nights
Swedish visitors accounted for a total of 21.1 million guest nights during the summer months, an increase of 3.5% from the previous year. Foreign visitors accounted for a total of 9.4 million guest nights, an increase of 8.8%.
This means that foreign visitors accounted for three out of ten guest nights during the summer months. Germany continues to be the largest tourist country with 2.6 million guest nights, with Norway second with 2.2 million. Together, these two countries accounted for over half of all foreign guest nights in Sweden.
Revenue for hotels increases the most
Total accommodation revenue for the summer amounted to SEK 14.2 billion, an increase of SEK 6.51 trillion or SEK 872 million from the previous summer. Hotel revenue increased the most, by SEK 8.71 trillion.
Västra Götaland the most popular region
Västra Götaland continues to be the region with the highest number of guest nights during the summer with 5.5 million, with Stockholm close behind with 5.2 million. However, it was Gotland and Kalmar that had the most guest nights per inhabitant with 11.7 and 10.1 respectively. The greatest positive development was in Västernorrland, Gävleborg and Västerbotten.
