Tourism companies have a greater desire to grow than the average small and medium-sized company.
They would like to both hire and increase their turnover, but have difficulty finding staff, shows the Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Development's report Everyday life and the future of tourism companies.
The desire for growth among tourism companies is higher than the average for small and medium-sized companies in Sweden. A full 80 percent of tourism companies want to grow, 50 percent by both increasing turnover and hiring new staff. This is shown by the new thematic report, which is part of the Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Development's series Conditions and Reality of Companies, which describes companies' experiences of everyday life and the future.
One obstacle to growth is that tourism companies are unable to find the right staff. 62 percent of respondents in the survey have tried to recruit in the past three years, but half had difficulty finding applicants with the right professional experience, skills or qualifications.
“The fact that tourism companies want to grow is important for employment in Sweden. It is also important for diversity and integration, as the industry attracts many people with a foreign background,” says Sofi Sjöberg, an analyst at the Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth who wrote the report.
At the beginning of June, the Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth publishes annual statistics showing tourism employment, turnover and export value.
