Tourism in the EU is increasing – Latvia is a new hot spot

The tourism industry in the EU is growing. In 2017, the number of overnight stays in the EU increased by 5.1 percent to a total of 3.2 billion.

Tourist visits were up 6.9 percent. In Sweden, growth was 0.5 percent overall and tourist overnight stays rose by 3.9 percent.

The number of tourist nights has increased every year since 2009. Spain increased by 3.6 percent, France by 6.6, Italy by 5.4 and Germany by 2.7. With 471 million overnight stays, Spain is the largest tourist country in Europe.

However, if you measure growth, Latvia is at the top with an increase of 12 percent. Slovenia increased by 11.3 percent and Croatia by 10.6. Portugal, the Czech Republic and Cyprus also end up at the top. Luxembourg is going against the grain and reducing its tourism industry.
