Lisbon's tourist attraction Gloria has derailed. At least 15 people have died and 23 people are injured. The funicular was descending from a viewing point and crashed into a restaurant. The funicular derailed as one of the carriages was descending from the São Pedro de Alcântara viewpoint, then crashed into a restaurant.
In a statement on his website, the country's president commented on the accident.

The accident is now being investigated by the police. There are still no official answers, but according to information in several Portuguese media outlets, the crash was caused by of a broken wire.
This is the second time that the tourist attraction Gloria has derailed. The first time was in 2018. A serious maintenance error caused the vehicle to derail. No injuries occurred then.
The attraction was then closed for about a month.
The Gloria funicular opened on October 24, 1885. It consists of two carriages connected by an underground cable. The line runs alternately up and down along two railway tracks.
