An 18-year-old Indian tourist has died after falling from a horse-drawn carriage in New York's Central Park, reports say. New York Times.
The accident happened on Wednesday when the driver got out to take a picture of the passengers. The horse then skidded, and the 18-year-old man fell off the carriage.
He was taken to hospital but his life could not be saved.
According to Alexander Kemp, vice president of the transport union, the driver must have been at least an arm's length from the horse.
"This is unacceptable. A driver should never leave the vehicle to take pictures. We support a full investigation into this," he said in a statement.
Animal rights organization Nyclass, which is working to abolish horse-drawn tourist carriages in New York, says it will urge the city's mayor, Zohran Mamdani, to sign an order to immediately ban the carriages.
