A large-scale forest fire is raging on the Croatian holiday island of Brac, local media report.

The fire broke out late on Thursday and has since grown rapidly. Over 3,000 hectares of land are now estimated to have been ravaged by fire.

On Saturday evening, the situation worsened when the flames spread towards the coastal resort of Milna and the nearby Osibova Bay.

Over 170 firefighters and 50 fire engines are participating in the operation. Water-bombing aircraft have also been deployed.

Extinguishing work is being made more difficult by strong and shifting winds that cause the fire to flare up and change direction.
