The effects of tourism on Sweden's economy increased in 2025 compared to the previous year. This is shown by the Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth's tourism accounts. Levels and developments refer to fixed prices with 2025 as the reference year unless otherwise stated.
Tourism consumption in 2025 higher than before the pandemic
Tourism consumption has increased every year since the pandemic year of 2020. Total tourism consumption (how much tourists spend) in Sweden amounted to SEK 504 billion in 2025. This is an increase of 2 percent compared to 2024 and the highest level since 2019.
“Domestic tourists make up the largest part of total tourism consumption, but foreign tourists contributed more to the increase,” says Maria Wiberg, statistician at the Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth.
Foreign visitors spent SEK 142 billion in Sweden in 2025, an increase of 4 percent compared to 2024. The foreign part of total tourism consumption in Sweden has grown in recent years, but it is still Swedes' tourism consumption in Sweden that is the largest part. Domestic tourism consumption was SEK 363 billion in 2025, an increase of 2 percent since 2024.
Tourism's share of Sweden's GDP is stable
Tourism's contribution to the Swedish economy (measured as a share in relation to GDP) was 2.8 percent in 2025. This is unchanged compared to 2024 but slightly lower than the share in 2019 when tourism's contribution amounted to 2.9 percent of Sweden's GDP.
Swedish tourists consumed more abroad
Sweden has had a negative net export of tourism for a long time, which means that Swedish tourists consume more abroad than foreign tourists consume in Sweden. In 2025, net exports of tourism amounted to minus SEK 33 billion, which is the same level as in 2024.
Hours worked decreased in 2025
Tourism employed an average of 155,000 people in Sweden in 2025, which was 2.8 percent of all employed people in the labor market. This is significantly lower than in 2019, when the number was 162,000 on average. The number fell sharply in 2020 and has since recovered to some extent, but from 2023 the recovery has basically stopped. The number of hours those employed worked, however, decreased in 2025 to 229 million hours. This is 2.7 percent of the number of hours worked in the entire economy.
