A major search effort has been underway for six missing tourists in the mountains.

The group was found this morning, the police confirmed to TT.

Several French people were searched by mountain rescuers after being reported missing on Sunday.
According to initial police information, the group, three men and three women, left Nikkaluokta at lunchtime on Sunday to ski to Kebnekaise mountain station.
When they did not arrive in the evening, the staff called the police.

After a long search, the tourists were found on Monday morning. Police told TT that four of the missing people had been found in the mountains and two people near Nikkaluokta.
According to SVT, which spoke to one of the tourists, the group had taken a wrong turn on their way to Kebnekaise. They then reportedly spent the night in a cabin.

Severe weather
During Sunday evening and the night before Monday, about ten snowmobile-borne mountain rescuers searched the area.
On Sunday, the weather was too harsh, with heavy snow and wind, to search by helicopter.
Earlier on Monday morning, the group had not yet been found.
– It is still a major search effort and we will be taking out new mountain rescuers and also police personnel to lead the search effort, says Johan Aittamaa, RLC commander.

During the morning, the weather had improved and a helicopter could be used in the search.
It looked early on as if a breakthrough had been reached in the search effort when a tent was discovered in the search area.
But in the tent there were no traces to follow of the missing Frenchmen.
– We found a tent with five people in it, but unfortunately it wasn't the ones we were looking for, says Maria Jakobsson, information officer at the North Region Police.
