Seven foreign tourists are being treated in hospital with suspected alcohol poisoning in Fiji. Several are said to be in critical condition.

They are all believed to have drunk cocktails at a five-star hotel on Saturday night and shortly afterwards became nauseous, vomited and showed symptoms of neurological damage.

The tourists are aged 18 to 56, including four Australians, one American and two foreigners living in Fiji, whose nationalities have not yet been disclosed.

Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) has urged tourists to be aware of the risks of, among other things, methanol poisoning when consuming alcoholic beverages in Fiji, writes the BBC.

The incident occurs just a few weeks after six tourists in Laos, two of whom were Danes, died from suspected methanol poisoning.

Fiji police are investigating the incident.
