Around 1,000 tourists are being evacuated after a forest fire broke out in the Puglia region in southern Italy, the rescue service announced.
Three water bombers and a helicopter are battling the fire on the Gargano peninsula. Tourists from the popular San Felice bay have been evacuated, among other things. Large parts of the Gargano National Park are in the fire area.
“The situation is critical,” the mayor of Vieste, Giuseppe Nobiletti, told Corriere della Sera.
There are concerns that the wind will spread the fire to the tourist complexes. Puglia attracts tourists from all over the world with its clear waters and white beaches.
After weeks of extreme heat, fires are breaking out daily in Italy. Last week, two firefighters died in Basilicata, the neighboring region of Puglia.
