Tourists missing while hiking

Four Belgian tourists have been missing on the border between Jämtland and Dalarna since Tuesday evening.

They are now being searched for by police and mountain rescuers.

The tourists were out hiking when they disappeared in the area around Lake Rogensjön at around 5 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon.

– Half of them made it to the cabin where they were supposed to, half didn't. That's when we were alerted, says Fredrik Bäcker, the police officer on duty.

The search started at 9:16 p.m. Police helicopters have been involved and mountain rescue teams have also been called out, reports Dalademokraten.

– We have no contact with them, but there is poor coverage in the area. They should be used to the mountains and bring warm clothes, tents and provisions, says Fredrik Bäcker.

The weather in the area was both windy and snowy when the four Belgians disappeared, reports Dalademokraten.

SMHI's digital forecast calls for three degrees Celsius and up to 16 meters per second of wind in the villages during the night towards Wednesday.
