Venetian authorities unveiled a new law on Friday that will mean tourists will have to pay a fee to visit the famous lagoon city, according to... The Guardian. 

The law will come into effect in January 2023, and will apply to all tourists who do not spend at least one night in Venice. In addition, day trips to the city will need to be booked in advance. 

Depending on whether it is low or high season, city tickets will cost between 3 and 10 euros. Anyone who does not buy a ticket during a temporary visit to the city risks being fined.

Plans to introduce a charging system in Venice, Italy's most visited city, have been underway for several years, but were temporarily put on hold during the coronavirus pandemic.
