Travel boom for China during the New Year

Remove

Despite the country's weak economy, China's population is traveling abroad more and more often.

During the Chinese New Year holiday in early February, the number of people entering and leaving the country increased by 11 percent compared to the previous year, and more than twelve million people traveled across the country's borders. Of these trips, Chinese people themselves accounted for more than seven million, an increase of 16 percent.

The increased travel is happening despite the country's economy having lost momentum recently.

The most popular destinations for accommodation in China were Thailand, Japan, Vietnam and South Korea. In 2017, the Chinese made 143 million tourist trips abroad and spent the most money in the world on international tourist travel.

Chinese New Year is one of the country's major holidays, with over a quarter of the population traveling within the country to visit family members.
