France is experiencing a record outbreak of the chikungunya virus this year – mainly in the southern and southwestern parts of the country. The well-known resort of Antibes is currently the worst affected with over 100 confirmed cases.
Chikungunya is a tropical disease spread by mosquitoes, which can cause very severe joint pain.
Pascal Lagier in Brive-la-Gaillarde says he no longer wants to be out in his garden. Tourists and residents are now being urged to wear full-coverage clothing and mosquito repellent.
