On Tuesday, TUI arrived My Ship 7 to Stadsgårdskajen in Stockholm, when the ship became the first international cruise ship to use Sweden's newly inaugurated shore power facility. This underlines TUI's commitment to promoting sustainable operations.
The inauguration of Sweden's first land connection for cruise ships took place on September 17. The facility, built according to international standards, makes it possible for ships that My Ship 7 to connect to electricity from the port and turn off their engines while at berth. This significantly reduces both emissions and noise levels, further establishing Stockholm as a premium destination for environmentally responsible cruise traffic.
TUI's commitment to greener technology
For TUI Cruises, the use of 100 percent green shore power is part of a broader strategy to reduce emissions across its fleet. This year, the brands are expected to My Ship and Hapag Lloyd Cruises to make 70 port calls with shore power, up from 52 last year, as TUI continues to lead in sustainable cruise operations.
In addition to using shore power, Mein Schiff 7 is prepared for future alternative fuels. The ship is equipped with a dual-fuel engine, tanks and piping that allow it to be powered by green methanol after engine adjustments. By 2026, TUI expects to My Ship 7 will be one of the first cruise ships to use green methanol, further promoting environmental responsibility within the cruise industry.
Electricity from the quayside significantly reduces the cruise ship's environmental impact
At least 45 percent of all cruise calls in Stockholm can now connect to the shore power facility, which supplies 100 percent green energy from renewable sources, such as wind and hydropower. Ports of Stockholm rewards ships with high environmental performance with discounts on port fees, which further encourages emission reductions. The new shore connection at Stadsgårdskajen, supported by EU funding and Sweden’s Climate Step initiative, is part of Ports of Stockholm’s long-term goal of achieving zero emissions from shipping operations by 2040. The expansion of shore connections is a key measure to achieve this vision and ensure that cruise traffic can grow sustainably in the region. Stockholm is a recurring stop for the TUI Cruises fleet during the summer months.
