Tech giant Uber and Chinese technology company Weride have launched a commercial robotaxi service in Abu Dhabi, Uber's first international venture into autonomous vehicles.
The Abu Dhabi venture will be small-scale to begin with, according to both companies. Neither Uber nor WeRide have shared any details about how many vehicles will initially roll out onto Abu Dhabi's streets.
The first launch will take place between Saadiyat Island and Yas Island, as well as along the routes to and from Zayed International Airport.
However, there was no stock market celebration for Uber, whose shares lost around 9.6 percent after the announcement that the Alphabet-owned Waymo expanded to Miami.
Over the past year, Uber has lined up partnerships in several sectors with companies such as Wayve, Serve Robotics, Aurora Innovation and Waabi.
