England's lockdown will continue until March 8. Prime Minister Boris Johnson said this, writes Reuters.
The government also announced new measures to limit travel to and from the country.
Boris Johnson said he hoped schools could open in March as a result of increased vaccination in priority groups.
”"We therefore hope that it will be safe to start opening schools from Monday, March 8, with other economic and social restrictions lifted thereafter, as long as the statistics allow," he said.
Under the new travel measures, travellers who cannot be refused entry to the country will now be quarantined for 10 days, paid for by the government. Those leaving the country must provide a reason for doing so, with holidays not being an approved reason.
Airlines and others in the travel industry have requested both necessary support following the announcement of the measures and a clear roadmap through the restrictions.
The UK recently passed 100,000 deaths from the virus.
