2,850 pilots will be forced to leave United Airlines this fall unless Donald Trump's administration comes up with a new financial aid package for the airline industry.
The American airline announced this on Thursday. The potential layoff amounts to 21 percent of United Airlines' pilot force and would be the largest in the company's history.
The airline industry received $25 billion, nearly 220 billion kronor, this spring to cover salaries and protect employees from being fired until September.
But when the support expires on October 1, employees will begin to be notified, according to United Airlines. Industry peers Delta Air Lines and American Airlines have issued similar warnings earlier this week.
The US Congress has been discussing the possibilities for a new economic aid package for several weeks, but without reaching an agreement.
