The United States will not yet lift its travel restrictions for foreign citizens, the White House announced on Monday, according to Reuters.
The reason is concerns about the delta variant of Covid-19 and the rising number of infections in the US at present.
”"Given where we are today... with the delta variant, we are maintaining the travel restrictions at this time. Driven by delta, the number of infections here at home is rising, especially among those who are unvaccinated, and it appears that it will continue to rise in the coming weeks," said White House press secretary Jen Psaki.
The tourism industry and airlines in the US had hoped for positive news for EU citizens, among others, but this may now have to wait until September or later.
The US has a travel ban on most people from the EU, China, India, South Africa, Iran and Brazil. Canada and Mexico were added to this list last week.
