At Thursday's video summit, EU leaders will discuss whether the EU should introduce a vaccination passport that would allow vaccinated people to travel freely within the EU.

This was said by the president of the EU summit, Charles Michel, in an interview with Dutch television on Sunday.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is expected to make such a proposal during the meeting.

Charles Michel said he supports the proposal and wants to start a debate between EU leaders.

There are two questions, he said: first, whether EU leaders support the principle of introducing such a vaccination certificate, and second, when it would come into effect if so.

”"If it were adopted too early, it would trigger great frustration in Europe. I am sure that outside Europe other countries will think about it," said Charles Michel.

However, he stressed that the debate is sensitive in many EU countries because a vaccination passport for travel could give the impression that vaccination is mandatory.

During the corona pandemic, EU leaders are holding a summit once a month, either by meeting in person or via video.
