Starting this summer, it will cost money to visit Venice.
The idea is that the money will go towards cleaning and security.
It is an additional tax, similar to an entrance fee, that all visitors will have to pay, the city council announced. The tax, or entrance fee, will help the city pay for cleaning and security.
“The costs of cleaning and security in the historic city center are considerable and have been paid for by the Venetians themselves over the years,” the city's mayor, Luigi Brugnaro, told the newspaper La Repubblica.
Anyone visiting the city, whether for a day trip or for several days, will have to pay the fee. According to The Guardian, a day trip into the old city could cost between €2.50 and €10, depending on the time of year.
The tax will be introduced on July 1, 2019, according to the city's decision. Today, tourists who stay overnight in Venice pay a special tax. A similar "visitor tax" exists on the Italian island of Elba.
