There could be a lot of snow in the coming days, especially along the coast in southern Norrland.

On Thursday, Gävleborg could receive up to half a metre of fresh snow, according to SMHI's forecasts.

– We want to give advance warning that the weather conditions could be unsettled, with large amounts of snow, says Marcus Sjöstedt, a meteorologist at SMHI.

After a relatively quiet Tuesday, larger amounts of precipitation are expected in the coming days, in connection with a low-pressure system moving in from the Atlantic.

On Wednesday, there will be sleet and rain in southern Sweden, while the South Swedish Highlands, northern Svealand, and areas further north will experience snowfall. SMHI is warning of persistent snowfall, with up to 10 centimetres of fresh snow expected in Västernorrland tomorrow.
– It will also be a bit windy, which can entail a risk of drifting snow, says Marcus Sjöstedt.

Moist air from the sea
Moving towards Thursday, SMHI expects easterly winds which will bring humid air from the sea – leading to extra intensity in the precipitation. The forecast is still too uncertain for any warnings to be issued, but if it proves correct, widespread snowfall is expected in Gävleborg.
"This corresponds to a class 2 warning. It could involve a total of 30 to locally 50 centimetres of new snow, and a fresh wind, says Marcus Sjöstedt.".

Warning of strong winds
SMHI is also warning of gales on the Skagerrak tonight, and for strong winds with snowdrifts in the mountains from Jämtland northwards from Wednesday.
At the same time, high water levels are still being warned of in many areas of Götaland and Svealand.
