China is expanding the list of countries whose residents can travel visa-free to the country for a limited period of time in an attempt to boost China's tourism and economy. Among the nine countries is now Japan, whose relationship with China has been strained, partly due to the Taiwan situation.

Other countries that are now eligible for visa-free travel for up to 30 days include Estonia, Latvia and Malta. Swedes still need a visa to travel to China.
