Global interest in the Eurovision Song Contest is growing. When the world's largest music competition takes place in Malmö in May, audiences from over 80 different countries will come. The major Eurovision countries are well represented, but Malmö receives visitors from virtually every corner and continent of the world.
As the Eurovision Song Contest 2024 approaches, Malmö is preparing for a global folk festival with ticket buyers from all over the world. The UK tops the list of foreign visitors, accounting for almost a fifth of total ticket sales.
However, interest in the event extends far beyond Europe's borders, with the USA and Australia in the top ten along with Germany, Denmark and Spain. Malmö will also receive long-distance visits from fans from countries such as Mexico, Brazil and New Zealand.
“It is truly fantastic that Malmö is able to welcome Eurovision fans and visitors from such a large and diverse part of the world. It clearly demonstrates the event's appeal and ability to unite people through music, culture and diversity,” says Karin Karlsson, lead project manager for Malmö's hosting.
More and more people are discovering Malmö as a destination, a trend that has been evident for many years. The cultural offering, the rich food culture and the great diversity in a small area that is easy to get around attract many.
With 186 nations represented in the population and located closest to the continent, Malmö is not only Sweden's window to the world but also the gateway to Sweden.
– We see Malmö as a place where people, cultural expressions and traditions can meet and get to know each other. Our event should also reflect this. When people from over 80 countries are welcomed by Malmö residents with backgrounds in over 180 nations, it can be incredibly exciting, says Karin Karlsson.
Foreign ticket buyers account for 66 percent of the total number of tickets sold so far. The remaining 34 percent come from Sweden.
– It is also very nice that there are so many visitors from our own country, who see Eurovision and the folk festival we create as an opportunity to experience and get to know Malmö. We are planning an incredibly broad program in the city with a focus on music. Even if you are not a Eurovision fan or a schlager fan, we can guarantee that the program offers something for you, Karin Karlsson points out.
