Fontanarossa Airport in Sicily has closed after a volcanic eruption on Mount Etna, several Italian media outlets report.

The ongoing eruption is said to have escalated on Tuesday evening and a large column of smoke extends for several kilometers.

Airplanes are now not allowed to take off or land at the airport. Neither buildings nor people are reported to have been damaged in connection with the outbreak.
