Authorities are warning that a series of small earthquakes could lead to an eruption of the Teneguia volcano on the island of La Palma.

The Instituto Geográfico Nacional, the Spanish agency that monitors earthquake risks in the country, said 4,222 small tremors had been recorded in the Cumbre Vieja National Park, around Teneguia. The institute has set the risk of volcanic eruptions on La Palma at yellow level, the second highest on a four-point scale.

“"More intense earthquakes are expected in the coming days," the authority wrote in a statement.

The last time Teneguia erupted was in 1971. Teneguia off Morocco is one of Spain's most active and famous volcanoes, along with Teide on Tenerife and Timanfaya on Lanzarote. (
