Worsened booking situation for US airlines – shares fall

According to the Adobe Digital Economy Index, domestic travel in the US was booked for $2.9 billion between August 1-21. A decrease of 33 percent compared to the same period in 2019. This is reported by the Financial Times.

”Domestic travel bookings so far in August show that US consumers are taking the Delta variant seriously and are once again changing their travel plans,” said Vivek Pandya, an analyst at Adobe Digital Insights, according to the Financial Times.

According to Vivek Pandya, American consumers therefore appear to be spending significantly less on domestic travel in August than in July. Two months that usually remain at about the same level.

Furthermore, EU countries decided on Monday to reintroduce travel restrictions on travelers from the United States due to the increased spread of the infection. The decision is a recommendation and each EU country decides on its own entry and exit rules.

Airlines are also having a tough time on Wall Street on Monday. With about 90 minutes left until the close, United Airlines is down 3.9 percent, Delta Air Lines is down 3.6 percent, American Airlines is down 3.4 percent and Southwest Airlines is down 3.1 percent.
