Swedish rail travellers have long wished for earlier ticket releases. SJ has listened. Tickets are now available for all SJ's Swedish night trains for travel over Christmas, New Year and the winter sports holidays.

Today, 11 June, SJ released tickets for all night trains, except for Euronight, for travel from 14 December 2025 to 8 March 2026, which is the last half-term week. This is approximately four months earlier than last year.

SJ's travellers, particularly those making winter journeys by night train, have long expressed a desire to be able to buy tickets earlier. This makes planning the journey easier, as other elements, such as accommodation, are booked further in advance.

SJ's new booking system makes it possible to release tickets earlier. The limitation lies mainly in the other planning surrounding the railway, for example, planned track work.

– We already have a sufficiently good picture of the traffic during Christmas, New Year, and the winter sports holidays to be able to release tickets for the night trains earlier. The departure times may change marginally, but in those cases, we will inform travellers well in advance, says Sofie Struve, Director of Commercial Traffic.

Night trains can only be booked to and from the stations served by the trains. Connecting journeys to night trains can only be booked during the regular booking period in the autumn. This means that when the journey takes place, SJ cannot see the entire journey in its systems and may not be able to provide the same level of assistance with connections and delays as we normally do.

We recommend that everyone booking a connecting journey to the night trains this autumn book with extra long changeover time, at least one hour. It may be necessary to be on the safe side, says Sofie Struwe.

Earlier release of night train tickets is one of the initiatives in SJ and Skistar's collaboration to offer sustainable travel to the Swedish mountains. The collaboration covers all of SJ's services to the mountains, not just the night trains. The ambition is also to run more and faster trains to the mountains by the winter season.

The ticket release includes the following routes with night trains:

  • Stockholm – Östersund, Duved, Åre
  • Stockholm – Umeå, Luleå, Kiruna, Narvik
  • Malmö-Linköping-Jämtland
  • Stockholm – Malmö
