The 112 Prize 2023 is awarded to the Swedish Maritime Administration, the Swedish Maritime Rescue Society, the Coast Guard, the Greater Stockholm Fire Department, the Eastern Blekinge Rescue Service and Stena Scandica for their efforts in connection with the ship fire in August 2022. The prize, which is being awarded today at the event "112 Day 2023", is given for the successful collaboration that had a major impact on the successful outcome of the operation.

Stena Scandica was near Gotska Sandön en route to Latvia when a fire broke out on the car deck. It was clear early on that the fire was extensive. The ship's personnel fought the fire and ensured that the passengers were brought to safety. Under the leadership of the Swedish Maritime Administration's Maritime Rescue Centre, several organizations prepared to assist the crew with the firefighting efforts and to take care of passengers and crew when the ship needed to be evacuated.

– The effort is a shining example of good coordination to save lives, property and the environment. Coordinating and working together in a systematic way is essential in a crisis – this year's award winner has truly demonstrated this, says Madeleine Raukas, CEO of SOS Alarm.

The justification for the 2023 112 Prize is as follows: 
The 112 Award 2023 will be awarded to the Swedish Maritime Administration, the Swedish Maritime Rescue Service, the Swedish Coast Guard, the Greater Stockholm Fire Department, the Eastern Blekinge Rescue Service and Stena Scandica. Their efforts in connection with the ship fire on the Stena Scandica in August 2022 demonstrate exemplary cooperation between the maritime rescue service and the ship's crew.

– We are very happy about the award and that our collaboration is being recognized. The sea rescue operation for Stena Scandica was the most extensive we have experienced in a very long time. The difficult conditions that prevailed meant many hours of work in rough weather for crews, rescue personnel and passengers. It is a testament to our strength that together we managed to handle the situation. We have all the time and all the work that is done in the everyday lives of all the actors involved to thank for that, and we will take the lessons learned from the operation with us in our constant work to become even better together, says Mattias Hyllert, Director of Maritime and Air Rescue at the Swedish Maritime Administration.

The 112 Prize
The 112 Prize will be awarded in 2023 for the eighth year in a row. The prize is given to actors who have made significant contributions to society in connection with a crisis or event in 2022. In recent years, the prize has been awarded for, among other things, proactive work against shootings in Malmö, efforts against mental health during the pandemic, and for the effort during the explosion in Linköping. SOS Alarm is behind the award, which is presented in connection with 112 Day.
