Southwest Airlines flight 1380 was forced to make an emergency landing in Philadelphia after an engine exploded.
An explosion shattered a window and a woman was reportedly partially sucked out of the plane as a result of the pressure drop, writes aftonbladet.se.
"There was blood everywhere," passenger Marty Martinez told CBS.
A woman has been confirmed dead, the investigation commission stated at a press conference.
The Southwest Airlines passenger plane was en route from New York's La Guardia Airport to Dallas International Airport when the plane's left engine exploded shortly after departure.
On Tuesday evening, the American accident investigation commission held a press conference and stated that one person had died in the accident and that seven people had sustained minor injuries.
A plane with 143 passengers and five crew members was forced to make an emergency landing in Philadelphia.
NBC reports that parts of the broken engine shattered a window – and caused a pressure drop.
A woman on board was partially sucked out of a window, according to a passenger's father, Todd Baur, to the television station.
– A passenger, a woman, was partially pulled out of the plane, but was pulled back in by other passengers on board, the man told NBC.
In American media, the pilot's radio communication with air traffic control during the incident is being quoted.
– We've lost part of the aircraft, says the pilot, continuing:
– They say it's a hole and that someone has fallen out.
The woman is reported to have been taken to hospital following the emergency landing at 11.30 local time.
”Blood everywhere”
For CBS, passenger Marty Martinez talks about the panic on board.
“It started with an explosion, and almost immediately afterwards the oxygen masks dropped down. A few seconds later, the engine smashed a window, leaving it wide open,” he told the TV channel.
According to Martinez, the woman by the window was seriously injured.
– There was blood everywhere.
He describes the horror as the plane sank:
– We were probably underwater for 10 or 15 minutes, and of course everyone was completely distraught and in tears. It was the most terrifying thing I’ve ever experienced.
Panicked
Passenger Timothy Bourman, a 37-year-old pastor from New York, was sitting further back in the plane but described a similar experience to the news site philly.com:
– Suddenly it felt as if we were falling 30 metres. Everyone understood that something had happened, that this was bad, really bad. A lot of people panicked and screamed, were really frightened.
– We were out of control for a while and it seemed as though the pilot was having trouble controlling the plane. To be honest, I think we all thought we were going to crash, he says.
Timothy Bourman recounts that the cabin crew urged passengers to assume the brace position for landing.
– My wife and I thought we were going to die. Now we're all very grateful to be alive, he says.
The aircraft in question is one of the world’s most common types of passenger aircraft, a Boeing 737–700.
