Italian Since 2011, it has been up to each municipality whether they want to charge a tourist tax. The fee varies from town to town, up to around 6–7 euros per night. This July, Venice permanently introduced a municipal fee for tourists visiting the city's historic centre for the day, just over 5 euros. The fee could be increased to 10 euros next year. Those who try to cheat the system risk fines of up to 300 euros.
France The tax varies between different cities and is levied across the country. It is highest in Paris, which in January made somewhat of a monster increase of around 200 per cent per guest night, depending on the standard. For accommodation in ”palaces”, the fee is closer to 15 euros per night. Five-star hotels have a tourist tax of just over 10.70 euros per night. The fee is scaled down depending on the standard. The cheapest is on one- and two-star campsites: 0.65 euros. For accommodation without stars, such as Airbnb, a fee of 5 per cent is charged on the accommodation cost.
Spain Similar to France, it is adjusting its tourist tax upwards, which varies in amount depending on the destination and standard. Barcelona is the most aggressive, having last increased the tax in April. Now in October, it is being adjusted upwards again, to 4 euros per guest night – a rise of approximately 23 percent from the April level. Exclusive accommodations have the highest surcharge: 7.5 euros per night for up to seven nights, as of October.
Portugal: Tourist tax is levied in 13 cities. In September, the tax in Lisbon will rise by 100 percent per tourist night, from 2 to 4 euros.
Croatia The tax varies between locations and also between low and high season. Just over 1 euro per night is standard. Dubrovnik is one of the most expensive cities, tax-wise for tourists, with a charge of up to just over 2.50 euros during the busiest months. Between October and March, the tax per night drops to under 2 euros.
Greece At the beginning of 2024, the tourist tax was replaced by a climate fee, which is levied throughout the country during high season. The fee varies between different types of accommodation. It is most expensive at luxury hotels, at 10 euros per night. At four-star hotels, it is 7 euros per night. After that, the amount decreases. The decision is expected to generate public revenue of approximately 300 million euros during the year (just over SEK 3.5 billion).
Germany Even in Germany, the tourist tax varies between different major cities. The standard is a surcharge of 5 percent on the accommodation cost. Since April 2024, business travellers visiting Berlin also need to pay tourist tax (5 percent).
Austria A tourist tax is levied on visitors in Vienna and Salzburg; the tax amounts to approximately 3 per cent of the total accommodation bill.
Switzerland Tax for tourists is levied throughout the country. The charge ranges from 2 to 7 Swiss francs (1 SFr is equivalent to just over 12 kronor).
Belgium Charged in larger cities like Brussels and Antwerp. The rate was recently increased by 1 euro per night and varies between cities, number of nights, room price and hotel standard. For a hotel, an additional charge of 5 euros per night is common. The increase is intended to compensate for the country's pandemic costs, such as rent relief for the unemployed and business support.
The Netherlands Amsterdam has one of the highest tourist taxes in Europe, recently raised from 7 to 12.5 percent of the accommodation cost. The city justifies the tax by stating that tourism increases the cost of keeping beaches clean, among other things.
Hungary There is a tourist tax in Budapest. The surcharge is 4 percent of the accommodation cost, regardless of the type of accommodation.
Czech Republic This applies in Prague. Generally, it amounts to 50 Czech koruna (just under 25 kr) per person per night for the first ten nights. Thereafter, the charge is halved to 25 CZK (nights eleven to 60).
Bulgaria The tax paid by tourists applies to overnight stays in all hotels. The level varies between locations and hotel standards, up to 3 Bulgarian lev (approximately 18 Swedish kronor).
Slovenia Taxation of tourists is levied throughout the country; the level is set according to the destination and standard of accommodation. Expect around 3 euros per night per person.
