The Norwegian government is proposing that all municipalities introduce a tourist tax. This means that an overnight stay could be a maximum of five percent more expensive, according to the government proposal that is now being put out for consultation, reports Norwegian news site E24.

The tax, or visitor fee, will be levied on overnight stays and is intended to finance additional costs that arise in places with a lot of tourists.

The industry organization NHO Reiseliv is against it. It will only make it more expensive to visit Norway, even for Norwegians themselves, they say. Norwegians account for two out of three overnight stays in Norwegian hotels.

The same debate emerged in Sweden recently, where several municipalities raised the issue of introducing local tourist taxes, but were not heard by the government.
