Ski holidays are popular – but they also cost a lot of money. For a family with children, the sports holiday week next year could cost almost 47,000 kronor, according to Länsförsäkringar.
”For many, it can be defined as a pure luxury trip,” says Stefan Westerberg, private economist at Länsförsäkringar.
The cost of spending a week in the mountains during the sports holidays has risen significantly in recent years. According to Länsförsäkringar, a week in the mountains cost around SEK 28,000 in 2018. Ahead of the 2025 season, it will be just over SEK 46,500 – SEK 5,000 more than in 2024.
”"We have seen a development where the cost has increased quite significantly and the mountain week during the sports break has become an expensive pleasure," says Stefan Westerberg at Länsförsäkringar.
The calculation looked at what it would cost for a family of two with children aged ten and twelve to spend the sports holiday in Åre next year.
The sports week in 2025 is estimated to cost 141 percent of the average monthly disposable income of a parent of young children. In 2018, it was 93 percent of monthly income.
”"We can see that the trip to the mountains takes up an increasingly large part of a family with young children's disposable income."”
Most things about the trip have become more expensive, everything from lift passes and accommodation to food and ski rentals.
”"The demand is there and that explains why prices are going up. If demand is strong, you can charge more."”
The cost of housing in particular has increased in price compared to a year ago, by almost 3,000 SEK.
”It will be a lot of money and some people will probably not be able to afford this,” says Stefan Westerberg.
Despite increased costs, it is believed that the desire to go on a skiing holiday will persist. But to the extent that you have small margins, you should ask yourself whether you can really afford to go, believes Stefan Westerberg.
”"So that you don't maintain a lifestyle that you don't have coverage for. And to the extent that you feel you have margins, it's good to plan for the whole year and then decide whether to go or not."”
