For many of us, stress creeps in as Christmas approaches. How do you avoid falling into these hidden stress traps? Here are five tips from Hanna Rohani, psychologist at Doktor 24:
1. Limit spending
Start by setting a budget. Calculate all the extra costs and then decide how much will be left over for gifts and entertainment. Try to make one financial decision at a time. It can easily become overwhelming if all the decisions have to be made at once.
2. Set reasonable expectations
Christmas not going as planned can lead to increased stress. We all experience setbacks and it is not a disaster if, for example, the food burns, someone gets in trouble or the children are disappointed with their Christmas presents. Ask yourself how important this will be in 10 years.
3. Maintain healthy routines
During the holidays, it is common to deviate from your routines with exercise, diet and recovery. There is no health risk to be careless for a limited period, but remember that our routines help us find balance and feel good. Therefore, try to get out for a walk even if you are stressed and try to maintain good eating and drinking habits.
4. Dare to ask for help
It's no wonder that those who are expected to handle most of the celebrations are the most stressed. Even if you feel a strong social responsibility and are used to it, it's only right that all healthy, adult individuals are involved. Ask for help and don't hesitate to delegate what you can't do.
5. Try to have fun
It's easy to get caught up in all the "shoulds, shoulds, musts". In reality, we don't have to do anything, even though it may feel that way. For many, the very purpose of Christmas is to be with people you love. Don't forget to have fun!
