Japan's Fujiyoshida cancels annual cherry blossom celebration due to overtourism.
Around 200,000 tourists visit the week-long festival each year, which is particularly popular due to Fujiyoshida's picturesque location overlooking Mount Fuji.
But this year, there will be no such thing. Residents have protested how the influx of tourists is disrupting the ”quiet lives” of the locals. Fujiyoshida, with a population of just under 50,000, has been inundated with traffic and discarded cigarette butts – and even tourists doing number two in people’s gardens.
A weak Japanese currency is said to be contributing to overtourism, which has also affected other parts of Japan. In Kyoto, for example, ”Instagram-obsessed” tourists have been accused of harassing geishas.
Last year, Japan was visited by a record number of tourists: 42.7 million.
