Alcohol and sleep on flights – a bad combination

Remove

Drinking and then taking a nap on a plane is not a good idea, according to several German scientists in a new study.

48 people slept in an environment with an air pressure equivalent to that of an aeroplane more than 2,400 metres above sea level. Everyone experienced one night with alcohol and one without.

The researchers then observed that when people drank alcohol, their blood oxygen levels decreased and their heart rate increased, even in those who were young and healthy, Sky News reports.

The quality of sleep also worsened.

Researchers also believe that there is a greater risk for those who fly first class or business, as they may have the opportunity to sleep in a horizontal position.
