The country's amusement and theme parks significantly increased their turnover this year compared to 2020. However, there is still some way to go to pre-pandemic levels.

The pandemic hit the country's amusement and theme parks hard. But this year things have turned around as restrictions have been eased. Swedish amusement and theme parks increased their turnover in July by 399 percent compared to the same month last year, according to new statistics from Statistics Sweden (SCB).

At the same time, there is still some way to go to reach pre-pandemic revenue levels.

”"The summer months account for 55 percent of the amusement and theme parks' annual turnover. During June–July this year, it amounted to SEK 750 million. This is of course a huge increase compared to 2020, but 31 percent lower than the same period in 2019," says Daniel Lennartsson, statistician at Statistics Sweden, in a comment.

The number of amusement and theme parks and employees in those operations has decreased compared to 2020. During this year's summer season, there were 145 such parks, eight fewer than last year.

In the summer of 2019, the industry employed 5,900 people. Last year, it was around 1,600 people.

”"For 2021, we have data up to June. The number of employed people was then 50 percent higher than in June 2020, but 60 percent lower than in 2019," says Daniel Lennartsson.
