Aircraft manufacturer Boeing is in talks to acquire subcontractor Spirit Aerosystems, the parties confirm after speculation sent Spirit Aerosystems shares soaring during Friday trading.

This was reported by CNBC after Friday's stock market close.

Reports that Boeing was in talks to buy back subcontractor Spirit Aerosystems, which makes fuselages for Boeing's 737 Max jetliner, sent Spirit shares soaring more than 15 percent on Friday. Boeing shares were down 1.8 percent.

Boeing spun off what is now Spirit Aerosystems in 2005.

In 2023, about 70 percent of Spirits Aerosystems' revenue came from Boeing, while about a quarter of the company's revenue came from Boeing's main rival, Airbus, which has declined to comment on the contract negotiations, according to CNBC.

The negotiations between Boeing and Spirit Aerosystems come less than two months after a part of a Boeing 737 Max 9 aircraft became detached during an Alaska Airlines flight, prompting the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to ground some of the Boeing 737 Max 9 aircraft.

”We believe that the reintegration of Boeing and Spirit AeroSystems” manufacturing operations would further strengthen flight safety, improve quality, and serve the interests of our customers, employees, and shareholders,” Boeing said in a statement on Friday, according to CNBC.
