Camping is a popular leisure activity in Georgia, both among the country's residents and tourists. With a landscape that stretches from the Caucasus Mountains to forested valleys and remote lakes, there is a wide range of camping opportunities in a variety of settings.

Camping is generally allowed in Georgia, even outside official campsites. In forests, near lakes and in remote places, the trend of free camping, or wild camping as it is sometimes called, is growing. It is also popular among Georgians to go on multi-day hikes with overnight stays under the open sky along the way.

Just like with the right of public access, there are rules and obligations. Consideration for private land, local people and natural environments is a fundamental requirement. In national parks and protected areas, special regulations apply. There, camping is usually only allowed in designated places, and in some areas a permit or advance booking is also required.

The common principle is ”leave no trace” – the golden rule of ”do not disturb, do not destroy”. Nature should be left in the same condition as when you arrived, and all waste should be taken away from the site. Littering can lead to fines.

The varied environments mean that camping experiences differ markedly between different parts of the country. Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park is known for its extensive network of trails and designated campsites, while Mtirala National Park is characterized by subtropical forests, waterfalls and streams. In northeastern Georgia lies Tusheti National Park, where isolated mountain villages and historic stone towers provide a unique glimpse into the country’s cultural heritage.

An adventurous option near the capital Tbilisi is Birtvisi Canyon, known for its rock formations, hiking trails and climbing opportunities. Adventurous families will also appreciate facilities such as Aragvi Adventure Center, X-Park and Rafting Adventure Park. These offer rafting, ziplining, cycling and other outdoor activities in addition to camping areas. Families looking for a more leisurely experience can head to the Tbilisi Sea recreation area, where you can camp near the water and there is easy access to sailing, fishing and swimming.

Since swimming is associated with camping for many, Georgia's lakes are also popular destinations. Peaceful Lake Bateti in Shida Kartli is surrounded by forest, while Lake Udziro in Racha is located at a high altitude with views of the surrounding mountains. Tobavarchkhili in Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti is reached via a longer hike and is mainly suitable for more experienced hikers and campers.

Among those who appreciate high terrain, Gomismta in Guria is particularly popular. On clear days, you can see all the way to the Black Sea and at night, you can enjoy stargazing. Other options in the mountainous areas are Shatili in Khevsureti, known for its medieval tower houses, and the Abudelauri Lakes in Mtskheta-Mtianeti. The three lakes are different colors – green, blue and white, respectively – and are located at different altitudes. They are reached via hiking trails that become slightly more advanced the higher you go.
