This year's cheapest ski resorts

The price difference of over 70 per cent is attracting more and more Swedish skiers to Eastern Europe.

”There is less congestion and a significantly better price level,” says Tom Friberg, communications manager at Forex Bank.

The ski season has arrived and planning for the winter break is in full swing. The Forex ski index once again shows that the cheapest ski trip is to Eastern Europe. Just like last year, it is Brezovica in Kosovo that you should go to in order to save the most.

”Brezovica might not be well-known to most Swedes, but the trip is a full 73 percent cheaper than the one to Åre,” says Tom Friberg.

The annual index compares the price level at 30 ski resorts around the world. The list is based on ski pass and accommodation costs, but also on typical holiday expenses such as lunch and transfers.

”If you're looking for affordable options, there's plenty to choose from. The standard in Eastern Europe might be a bit lower than what we're used to, but it's still a fantastic skiing experience,” says Tom Friberg.

In contrast, Aspen in the USA tops the list as the most expensive destination. The index shows that the bill for an Aspen trip will be more than three times higher compared to a similar trip to Åre. Among the reasons are unusually high prices for ski passes and ski hire.

Johan Solbreck, developer of the website alltomskidresor.se, follows the daily developments of where Swedes most prefer to spend their ski holidays. He says that the cheaper options are becoming increasingly popular, but that classics like Italy and Switzerland continue to be superior.

”The Alps are definitely the most popular. However, this year we have seen an increase in bookings to Eastern Europe, which can often be favourably compared with, for example, Åre, he says.

When choosing a ski destination, what should you consider?

”The main thing is to check the amount of snow, as there are never any guarantees of snow. This year, for example, there’s an incredible amount in the Alps. If you consider the financial aspect, I would recommend booking early or going for a last-minute deal.”
