From now on, La Rambla and other streets in Barcelona will be quiet between 1 a.m. and 6 a.m. Following the increase in new infections due to the delta variant of the coronavirus, several cities in the Spanish region of Catalonia have reintroduced nighttime curfews.
The regional government has received permission from the court to reintroduce curfews in places where the infection rate exceeds 400 cases per 100,000 inhabitants for at least one week.
Catalonia, which is currently among the hardest-hit regions in Europe, has had over 1,100 cases of infection per 100,000 inhabitants in recent days.
The curfews are in effect until July 23, but will likely need to be extended for several weeks, according to the region's highest court.
”"It is a difficult measure, but we must stop the infection, save lives and protect healthcare," writes Catalonia's regional president Pere Aragonès on Twitter.
Just a few days ago, Catalonia introduced restrictions that a maximum of ten people are allowed to gather and that all public activities must end by 00:30 at the latest.
