The East Asian Museum in Stockholm will close on May 6. The museum will remain closed for two full years due to an elevator replacement.

– It may seem boring but is completely necessary, says Superintendent Ann Follin.

The current elevator is worn out and does not meet all legal requirements. So far, a number of people have been stuck in it.

– And it can't continue, this has to be done, says Ann Follin.

The elevator replacement in the premises on Skeppsholmen in Stockholm is being carried out by the owner, the Swedish Real Estate Board. The replacement of the elevator itself will take about six months. Ann Follin explains the long closure with extensive pre- and post-operation work as the museum staff has to pack up exhibitions and objects. At the same time, the basic exhibitions will be updated and a new exhibition will be built up for the reopening.

– The elevator goes to all floors and affects the escape routes, which means we cannot be open to either visitors or staff, she says.
