A crew member was injured by a flying champagne cork during a long-haul flight with the German company Tui fly, writes the newspaper Arbetarskydd.
The union's safety representative is critical of how the employer handled the injury.
”"This was not an incident but a serious work-related injury to an employee during working hours which could have led to a danger to a young person's health," the safety representative writes in the report to the Swedish Work Environment Authority.
The airline defends itself by saying that there are clear instructions on how to open champagne bottles. It claims that this information points out that it can be dangerous to open a fake champagne bottle due to the pressure in both the bottle and the aircraft, and that it is therefore important to angle the bottle away from you to avoid injury.
The safety representative wants the employer to investigate whether there are champagne bottles with screw caps that can be replaced.
